Ludvig Aberg shook off some of the rust he felt in the opening round as Matt Wallace kept alive his hopes of retaining his PGA Tour card at The RSM Classic.
Swedish Ryder Cup star Aberg, playing his first event since knee surgery in September, fired six birdies and an eagle in an eight-under 64 on the Plantation Course at the Sea Island Club in Georgia.
After an opening 73 on the Seaside Course, he picked up four shots in the final four holes of his second round to revive his title defence.
It leaves him six shots off the lead held by Patrick Fishburn, who matched Aberg's round, with fellow Americans Maverick McNealy and Lee Hodges - who shot a 63, the lowest round of the day - a shot off the pace at 10-under-par.
The RSM Classic is the last chance for players to finish in the top 125 on the FedEx Cup rankings and secure access to all full-field events and The Players Championship next season.
Wallace, who started the tournament ranked 133rd, shot a four-under-par 68 and is one behind Aberg.
Fellow Englishman David Skinns teed off in 120th and faces a nervous weekend after he missed the cut by eight strokes.
American Joel Dahman, who was 124th in the rankings, holed a five-and-a-half foot putt on the last hole after two late birdies to make the cut and keep his hopes of retaining his card alive.
