Laois to appoint Tommy Fitzgerald as manager of senior hurlers

Nov 23,2024

Former Laois hurler Tommy Fitzergald is to take over as the county's new senior hurling manager.

Last week Darren Gleeson stepped away from the role to undergo cancer treatment.

The Tipperary native had only been ratified as the county's manager in August. Gleeson said the cancer was diagnosed in the wake of an arm injury he suffered following a recent accident.

Laois have moved quickly to fill the position, with Fitzgerald's name to be put forward for ratification at Monday's county committee meeting.

Fitzgerald managed his club Portlaoise to Premier Intermediate success in 2023 and was also involved as coach with Galway side St Thomas' in their All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling title glory last January.

He served as a coach/selector under Eddie Brennan when Laois won the Joe McDonagh Cup in 2019.

Niall Corcoran is expected to take on the role of lead coach, with Fitzgerald's remaining backroom team to be confirmed in the coming days.
