Newry fighter Conor Wallace closes on world title shot after penning deal with Matchroom Boxing

Nov 05,2024

Newry-born boxer Conor Wallace has signed a promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing with a view to challenging for a world title.

The Australian-based Irishman, who boasts an impressive 14-1 record with 10 victories coming by knockout, is considered to be one of the most exciting light-heavyweights in the division.

He is ranked second by the IBF, with the WBO placing him at fifth and the WBC listing Wallace sixth in their standings.

Wallace is well placed to receive a world title shot and is the current WBO inter-continental champion.

Wallace – who fights next on 11 December against Asemahle Wellem in Australia, – is determined to close in on a big opportunity in a division that is almost certain to open up in 2025.

Artur Beterbiev is the current undisputed champion but the 39-year-old is thought to be in the final stages of his career, potentially giving the Wallace the chance to fight for a vacant belt.

"I'm very excited," said Wallace. "I've dreamt about being a world champion since I was a young boy. That is my ultimate goal.

"I'm looking forward to some huge nights ahead with Matchroom, Tasman Fighters and Goldstar – and I'm fully focused on the job at hand on 11 December."

Wallace was a six-time Irish amateur champion before turning professional in September 2018. He has boxed in Australia since that time.
