Leona Maguire struggles as Japan's Mao Saigo leads in Malaysia

Oct 25,2024

Leona Maguire carded a one-over round of 73 that leaves her ten shots off the pace after the opening round of the Maybank Malaysia Open.

Japan's Mao Saigo is a shot clear of the field after a round that contained ten birdies, as she posted a nine-under 63.

For Maguire, it was a frustrating day, despite consecutive birdies to open her round on the 10th and 11th holes. A run of pars followed before a double bogey-six on the second – her 11th - and a bogey on six.

Saigo leads by a shot from Korea’s Haeran Ryu, who recorded eight birdies during a bogey-free round, with China’s Ruixin Liu and Chinese Taipei’s Wei-Ling Hsu a shot further back.

Defending champion Celine Boutier also went bogey-free round en route to carding a five-under 67 to sit in a tie for 11th place. She outlasted Jeeno Thitikul in a nine-hole playoff in 2023 to win the inaugural Maybank Championship.

Canadian Brooke Henderson shot a three-under 69 on Thursday, two strokes ahead of Hannah Green. The Australian is aiming to ride the momentum of her third victory of 2024 and sixth career win last week in South Korea into a strong showing in Malaysia.
