The New York Yankees booked their place in the World Series as they clinched a 4-1 series victory over the Cleveland Guardians.
Juan Soto's three-run home run in the 10th inning secured a 5-2 win in game five of the American League Championship Series and clinched the Yankees first appearance in the World Series since 2009.
They will face either the Los Angeles Dodgers or city rivals the New York Mets. The Dodgers lead 3-2 in the National League Championship Series ahead of the remaining matches in Los Angeles.
Cleveland, chasing a first title since 1948 in baseball’s longest drought, had opened a 2-0 lead in the early innings before Giancarlo Stanton levelled matters with a two-run home run in the sixth inning.
Tied at 2-2 at the end of the regulation innings, the game headed into extra innings and Soto – who was acquired in a trade with the San Diego Padres in the off season – settled matters with two outs.
The Yankees have won a record 27 World Series titles, but only one since completing a hat-trick of successes in 2000.
