Championship wrap: Callum Robinson on target in Cardiff rout

Oct 20,2024

Republic of Ireland striker Callum Robinson was on target as Cardiff produced their best display of the Championship season to thrash Plymouth 5-0 and heap further misery on Wayne Rooney.

Alex Robertson struck first his league goal since joining from Manchester City in the 16th minute, with Rubin Colwill doubling Cardiff's lead eight minutes later.

Rooney - serving a one-match touchline ban - then saw Ibrahim Cissoko receive a straight red card before Anwar El Ghazi, Robinson and Chris Willock got in on the act - leaving Plymouth winless on the road this term.

After scoring, Robinson paid tribute to his former teammate at Sheffield United, George Baldock.

Baldock, 31, was found dead in his swimming pool at his home in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada on Wednesday.

Goals from Jaidon Anthony and Josh Brownhill helped Burnley return to the top of the table with a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Burnley were looking to return to winning ways following their goalless draw with Preston before the international break and Anthony kept his composure in front of goal to nudge the Clarets in front before the break.

It only took Burnley five minutes into the second half for them to double their lead as Brownhill slotted in the rebound from Zian Flemming's initial effort to stretch their unbeaten run to seven while Wednesday lost for the first time in four matches.

Freddie Potts and Callum Lang struck to give Portsmouth their first win of the campaign as they came from behind to beat QPR 2-1.

QPR hit the front early on through Karamoko Dembele but Lang cut back to Potts who thrashed home the leveller and they had the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot before the hour mark which Lang gladly accepted.

Dane Scarlett of Oxford is congratulated after grabbing a leveller

Substitute Dane Scarlett headed a dramatic injury-time equaliser to earn Oxford a 1-1 draw against West Brom and prevent the Baggies going top.

Karlan Ahearne-Grant's second goal of the season gave Albion a first-half lead but Oxford rallied in the second half and in the third minute of stoppage time, Elliott Moore headed on Will Vaulks' long throw and Scarlett nodded home from seven yards out - the leveller maintained United's unbeaten home record this season.

Emil Riis struck in the 72nd minute to keep Preston's unbeaten home record intact under Paul Heckingbottom as the Lilywhites beat Coventry 1-0.

Luton secured a first win in four matches with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Watford.

Jordan Clark nudged the hosts in front in the 11th minute and Carlton Morris doubled their advantage two minutes after the break. Jacob Brown struck in stoppage time to round off a superb display.

Blackburn maintained their 100% start to the season at Ewood Park with a 1-0 win over Swansea thanks to Tyrhys Dolan's 13th minute strike.

Bristol City celebrate Yu Hirakawa's goal

Bristol City continued their recent good form with a 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough to stretch their unbeaten run to five matches.

Anis Mehmeti and Yu Hirakawa struck before the break to send the Robins up to 10th while Michael Carrick's side suffered a second straight defeat.

Mihailo Ivanovic's first goal for Millwall rescued a 1-1 draw against Derby in what turned out to be a slow-burner at The Den.

Ivanovic, the 19-year-old Serbian striker signed from Vojvodina on transfer deadline day, took his late equaliser superbly after Jerry Yates' untidy 78th-minute opener had threatened to steal the points for the Rams.

Stoke boss Narcis Pelach earned a point against his former club as his side played out a 1-1 draw with Norwich at the bet365 Stadium.

Ante Crnac's first goal for the Canaries gave them a brief lead, but Million Manhoef's strike meant the points were shared.
