Robbie Henshaw the latest central contract extension for IRFU

Dec 24,2024

Robbie Henshaw is the latest Ireland international to commit his future to the IRFU, with the centre signing a two-year extension to his central contract with the union.

The Leinster centre had been the subject of interest from France in recent months, but Henshaw has now chosen to stay in Ireland through this World Cup cycle in 2027.

"It is a great boost to secure my long-term future with the IRFU and I am delighted to get this deal concluded ahead of a busy period," the 31-year-old said.

"It is a huge privilege to play rugby in Ireland because we are so well looked after, from coaching, facilities, sports science and player management perspectives.

"It's also an incredibly competitive place to play rugby, and, even though we have enjoyed some success in recent years, there is great hunger within Irish Rugby to continue driving forward. I believe that my best days are to come and I am excited to continue my journey here in Ireland."

Henshaw started three of Ireland’s four games during the Autumn Nations Series last month, bringing his haul of Ireland caps to 77, while he also won three Test caps with the British and Irish Lions on the 2021 tour of South Africa.

The Athlone native started his career at Connacht where he played 77 games and helped the province to a famous Pro12 title in 2016.

After winning that title, the centre joined his native Leinster where he has played 93 games, scoring 20 tries.

"Since breaking into the senior international squad 11 years ago, Robbie has been a consistent presence in one of the most competition areas of the Irish backline," Irish Rugby’s performance director David Humphreys said.

"Robbie is a consummate professional and a popular figure who continues to set the bar high. His performances during the recent Autumn Nations Series suggest that there is even more to come and I am delighted that he will continue his playing career here in Ireland and with Leinster."

Henshaw is the fifth high-profile international to confirm a contract extension in the last week, following on from Andrew Porter, Tadhg Furlong, James Ryan and Bundee Aki.
