Long-serving Mayo goalkeeper Rob Hennelly announces inter-county retirement

Dec 17,2024

Long-serving Mayo goalkeeper Rob Hennelly has announced his inter-county retirement.

The 34-year-old made his debut in 2011 and won seven Connacht SFC titles and two Allianz League titles during his time between the sticks.

The Breaffy native played in three All-Ireland finals as Mayo proved to be Dublin's closest challengers during the Jim Gavin era, but has slipped behind Colm Reape in the pecking order.

Hennelly, based in the Dublin for the majority of his career, transferred to Raheny and will continue to play in the Dublin Senior Football Championship.

Often handed long-range place-kicking duties, he scored 38 points for his county.

Hennelly’s final appearance for Mayo was against Tyrone in a league encounter earlier this year.

"I am privileged to have been involved with the Mayo senior team since 2009 and to have played at the highest level for as long as I have," he said.

"However, now feels like the right time for me to retire from inter-county football, although I’m sure many thought I already had!

"I tried to give it a go again this year, but life moves fast as they say – and I'm grateful to be leaving on my own terms and with so much to look forward to in 2025 and beyond."

It will be further change in personnel for Mayo manager Kevin McStay after Cillian O’Connor’s confirmed his decision to step away for the 2025 season.
