Joey Carbery is finding his bearings in Bordeaux

Dec 15,2024

Ex-Munster and Leinster fly-half, Joey Carbery made the move to French side Bordeaux Begles in the summer and has got his Champions Cup campaign with the French Top 14 side off to a flying start after getting the nod for the number 10 jersey in the starting XV this week.

The Begles trailed 19-14 at the break, but thanks to a hefty boost from the bench put 21 points on the Ulstermen by the time the final whistle was blown at the Kingspan Stadium..

The 29-year-old kicked two conversions, then gave way for Matéo Garcia in the 64th-minute, but admits it was Ulster who were on-form in the opening half.

"Really proud of the boys, how we showed up in the second half and we put our things together, which is great.

Despite what seemed like a heroic turnaround in tactics, according to Carbery, there were no major half-time dressing room pep-talks from head coach Yannick Bru.

"Not much, not much (was said), Carbery added.

"Just stop giving penalties away, get into the game a bit more, hold on to the ball...delighted with the result, delighted with the five points.

There was reason to celebrate for Joey Carbery on his first Champions Cup start for Bordeaux

It was the second-half where the Begles got into their stride, putting three tries on the scoreboard within ten minutes. The Irish international feels once they calmed themselves after the early Ulster attack they were able to flow.

"I think it was quite frantic in pieces, so I think we needed a bit of a calm head and then just our flow of the game, we got into the game and everything started to click.

"We know what we can do, we just needed the opportunities to do it.

"I think being patient enough to know that there will be opportunities for us to score tries in the game and that came in the second-half... it was great to have the belief that we knew we could put it out there in the second," he added.

Carbery made the move to France earlier this year after a six-year stint at Munster. His family are settling in and having Noel McNamara (attack coach) there is an obvious comfort.

"Really liking it (Bordeaux). My wife and my son are getting on well and we're starting to get to grips with everything. Language is tough but we're slowly getting there.

"Bordeaux is a beautiful city and it's quite close to home so my wife and son can get home every now and again which is great... Obviously having Noel there as well for me has helped me through this transition period a lot.

"So, starting to get to grips with everything a little bit more now and hopefully keep being involved, keep playing and see where we go."
