FULL LEADERBOARD
The world number one carded eight birdies in his second round – seven of them on the front nine – to move to the top of the leaderboard on 13-under par in Albany.
It might have been even better but for a short missed putt at the 18th.
Fellow Americans Akshay Bhatia and Justin Thomas were on 11 under, after carding 66 and 67 respectively, with United States Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley fourth on nine under.
"I did a lot of good things," said Scheffler. "The front nine was really nice, obviously. Under par on the back nine as well, so a solid day."
Sepp Straka and Ludvig Aberg headed the European challenge in a three-way tie for fifth on seven under along with South Korea's Im Sung-jae.
First-round leader Cameron Young fell back to five under after a three-over-par 75 that included a double bogey at the 18th.
