FAI apologise over use of 'Londonderry' in programme

Dec 05,2024

The FAI has apologised after last night's match programme against Wales portrayed a map of Ireland featuring the term 'Londonderry'.

The graphic displayed the 32 counties of Ireland with details of where each player of the women’s team was from around the island.

County Derry was identified as Londonderry, rather than Derry.

Former Ireland international James McClean posted a picture of the graphic with a caption of "disgusting, pathetic and insulting".

The Derry man added: "Hang your head in shame you shower of a******es".

An FAI spokesperson described it as a genuine mistake and apologised.

They said: "The wrong graphic was inadvertently used in an Ireland Women's National Team match programme, this was a genuine mistake and the Football Association of Ireland apologises for any offence caused."

Ireland were beaten 2-1 by Wales in the game as their hopes of qualification for Euro 2025 ended.

It is the second mishap in a match programme this year as the governing body issued a previous apology following an Under-21 fixture with Latvia when some of the opposition players were described as 'Robert the Liar' and 'Dario S**t' due to a translation error.
