'It's been a pretty wild ride' - Ireland Sevens captain Harry McNulty to retire

Nov 28,2024

Ireland men’s sevens captain Harry McNulty has announced his retirement from rugby, confirming his decision on social media.

The 31-year-old captained Ireland at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and played more than 140 times for his country in his nine years on the programme. He participated in two Olympic Games, while he was also part of the squad that won bronze at the Sevens World Cup in Cape Town in 2022.

A former Munster academy wing/centre, McNulty was an original member of the Ireland Sevens team when the current professional programme was established in 2015 ahead of their first Olympic qualifier in Bosnia.

Along with Terry Kennedy and Mark Roche, he was one of three members of that 2015 squad who were part of the Ireland team at the Olympic Games, finishing his career with a quarter-final in Paris.

"Little did I know in 2015 when my mom signed me up to an open day for the 7s program, it would all turn out like this," he said in his retirement announcement on social media.

"From Bosnia to Paris, it’s been a pretty wild ride and one that I will cherish forever."

While McNulty is finished playing rugby, he is still set to be heavily involved on the World SVNS Series this season, where e will be working in a media role, having previously worked as a photographer and content creator in his spare time.

"I’ve travelled the world and have made friends in every corner of the planet.

"Core status qualification, 2 x World Cups, 2 x Olympics, captaincy and memories last lifetime. What a ride!

"For now the boots may hang but the door remains open and I’m excited for what the future holds.

"It’s the right time to put my energy into the next stage of my life.

"Thank you to Mom, Dad, Ella, Sean, Ciara, my family and friends, teammates and opponents. You made this journey possible," he added.
