Championship wrap: Irish quartet all on the mark

Nov 24,2024

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson will have plenty of Championship action to look back on this evening with four of his players getting on the scoresheet on a busy afternoon.

Fresh from making his international debut Mark McGuinness capped off a memorable week as he scored the only goal in Luton's 1-0 victory over Hull City.

Despite Hull being the better team, it was Luton who took the lead on 33 minutes when a Shandon Baptiste corner which caused problems, flicking off a defender's head and landing at the feet of Mark McGuinness who was able to swivel and half volley in his first goal for the club.

Aaron Connolly netted his first goal in Sunderland colours when he opened the scoring in his side's 1-1 draw with Millwall.

Connolly put the Black Cats ahead with a sweetly-struck volley from the edge of the penalty area but they were unable to hold out.

Femi Azeez levelled for Millwall three minutes into stoppage time in a game heavily delayed by medical emergencies in the crowd.

Middlesbrough smashed six goals past Oxford to signal their intent to disrupt the order at the top with Finn Azaz scoring twice.

Emmanuel Latte Lath scored a hat-trick, one from the spot, Azaz a brace and Tommy Conway the other, with Greg Leigh and Dane Scarlett responding.

Azaz claimed two assists, setting up Latte Lath twice, but the pick of his involvement came when he curled in number six, even minutes from time to complete the rout.

Tom Cannon was also on the mark, scoring Stoke City's only goal as they drew 1-1 with bottom side QPR.

Cannon put the visitors ahead in the 24th minute with a superb curling effort for his eighth goal of the season and fourth in his past five matches.

Zan Celar wasted a chance to score his first goal for QPR when he missed a penalty. However, Marti Cifuentes' struggling side equalised in the 62nd minute when Koki Saito's corner was inadvertently touched in at the near post by Ben Gibson.

Elsewhere in the Championship 10-man Sheffield United were unable to fully build on their lead at the top as they were held 2-2 at Coventry.

Tyrese Campbell opened the scoring before Norman Bassette scored his first Coventry goal to level.

Jesurun Rak-Sayki put the Blades back in front before Anel Ahmedhodzic was sent off for grabbing Bassette by the throat and throwing him to the floor in a crazy rush of blood just before half-time.

Coventry piled on the pressure in the second half as Bobby Thomas headed Coventry level with 10 minutes remaining.

As a result Burnley were able to close in on them – with Leeds playing at Swansea on Sunday – thanks to a 1-0 win at Bristol City, earned by Jaidon Anthony.

Norwich are without a win in seven after they drew 2-2 at West Brom.

They went behind to Mason Holgate, but quickly led thanks to Emiliano Marcondes and an own goal from Torbjorn Heggem, but their lead lasted just two minutes before Josh Maja equalised.

Sam Greenwood and Jerry Yates traded goals as Preston and Derby drew 1-1, while Di'Shon Bernard’s first Championship goal for Sheffield Wednesday cancelled out Ollie Tanner’s opener as the Owls drew 1-1 with Cardiff.

At the foot of the table, Luton’s Rob Edwards emerged from the clash of under-pressure managers as his side beat Tim Walter’s Hull 1-0 thanks to Mark McGuinness’ goal. Hull are now in the relegation zone.
