Leona Maguire will take part in the CME Group Tour Championship this week, having been handed an unexpected reprieve to take part in the 2024 LPGA Tour season-ending event.
The tournament, starts at Tiburón Golf Club on Thursday where the world's top 60 players are invited to play for an $11 million purse with a $4 million prize for the winner, the largest winner’s cheque ever offered for a women’s golf event.
Maguire looked set to miss out on the showpiece event when she missed the cut at the ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge tournament at Pelican, Florida.
The Cavan golfer went into last week’s tournament sitting in 57th place in the Race to CME rankings and the fear was that, having missed the cut, she would drop outside the top 60.
However Maguire’s rivals were unable to take advantage of her slip-up and in the end she dropped only one place to 58th, sitting inside the cut-off point for the Tour Championship.
Spain’s Carlota Ciganda was the only person who was able to break into the top 60 as she climbed from 63rd spot to 60th with a 14th place finish at the ANNIKA.
Australia’s Stephanie Kyriacou, who missed the cut at the same event, dropped two places from 60 to 62nd to miss out on the season-ending tournament.
Stephanie Meadow will also be absent, finishing 101st in the Race to CME standings.
