Laois hurling manager Darren Gleeson steps down to undergo cancer treatment

Nov 17,2024

Laois senior hurling manager Darren Gleeson has stepped down in order to undergo cancer treatment.

The Tipperary native had only been ratified as the county's manager as recently as August, having stepped away from the Antrim job.

Explaining the circumstances underpinning his decision to depart inter-county management for the time being, Gleeson said the cancer was diagnosed in the wake of an arm injury he suffered following a recent accident.

"I regret to announce that I am stepping down as Laois senior hurling manager to undergo treatment for cancer," he said in a statement.

"The cancer was diagnosed following a recent accident in which my upper arm was broken unexpectedly.

"It is essential, based on the medical advice I have received, that I fully focus in the month ahead on my treatment and recovery.

"Unfortunately, it is therefore not possible to continue the busy and responsible role of being an inter-county manager."

Thanking the Laois county board for their support and understanding, the Portroe clubman added: "This is a challening and difficult time for my family and me, but we are determined and optimistic about the road ahead.

"We are fortunate to enjoy great support from our families, friends and local community in Portroe."

Laois GAA expressed their best wishes to Gleeson and his family, and said that they have commenced the process of identifying a successor.

Previous to taking the managerial position with Laois, Gleeson had enjoyed a successful stint with Antrim, leading the Ulstermen to two Joe McDonagh Cup victories in 2020 and 2022. They also won a Division 2 league title in 2020 and have remained in the top flight since.

This year, Antrim also secured Leinster senior hurling championship status for a further season, drawing with Wexford and beating Carlow in the round-robin stage.

During his time as a player Gleeson won two All-Irelands, six Munster Championships, and one Allianz Hurling League during 10 years on the Tipperary senior hurling panel.
