It was a topsy-turvy front nine, where two bogeys in the opening five holes were cancelled out by an eagle at the par-five seventh after a superb approach shot.
The Waterford native followed that up with a double bogey and birdie to sit on one over.
The back nine was a more sedate affair, with nine consecutive birdies as he finished for 72 where Hayden Springer and Justin Lower share the lead.
The pair shot six-under-par 65s respectively at Port Royal Golf Course and hold a one-shot lead over Patrick Rodgers, Joseph Bramlett and Kevin Dougherty.
While Rodgers and Bramlett had completed their rounds of 66, Dougherty had one hole to play. He had just eagled the par-5 17th hole - recording his second eagle of the day - to move to five-under par.
Play concluded with 21 players yet to finish their rounds.
